Okay…I’ll admit it, the headline may be a little over exaggerated. But you’ve been there before, right? You’re sitting in your home, minding your own business, when someone knocks on your door to sell you some random product? Or better yet, how many of you have been called by an automated robot trying to sell you some life insurance program?
It’s frustrating, right?
Let’s face it, we don’t like people to sell us stuff; especially stuff that we can’t use.
The Battle For Your Attention
The truth is, we are bombarded with too much information as it is; so much so that our brains tend to tune out the information that is irrelevant to us. Consider how many times you were exposed to an advertisement this morning on your way to work. Chances are, you don’t remember because your brain tuned them out for you. But take a moment to look around you and I bet that you can find at least five or more brands that are begging for your attention.
Who REALLY Cares?
When we first started Beckon and came up with the idea to offer small businesses a way to compete online, we knew we had a big idea. From a business perspective, the idea is brilliant; it’s a scalable and systematic solution that solves a very common business challenge. The initial problem, however, was that we weren’t telling the RIGHT people. My mom, for example, is the nicest person on the planet and would be more than glad to provide feedback on our idea, but when it comes to building an online business presence she’s just not interested in signing up. Why? …because she doesn’t run a business.
Be Remarkable and Your Idea Will Spread
The trick to having your product do well is not forcing everyone in the world to hear your sales pitch but rather having the RIGHT people really enjoy your product.
Soon after we realized we were pitching our idea to the wrong people, we started pitching it to the right people. And now, rather than calling people every day to try and convince them to sign up, we now have clients who call us every day just to tell us how excited they are about their business’s progress and how they just referred us to several other business owners they know.
Key Take-aways
1) Create a REALLY remarkable product/service.
2) Sell it to someone who REALLY needs it.
3) Continually provide value and people will tell others for you.
